I-CAR Classes We'd Like To See
by B. Pillar
July 2008

Parts Installation Made Simple
3 Points
Class Code: PMS

Learn how to install non-OEM parts that do not fit. In this slow-moving class with many interruptions, you’ll learn how and where to bend, cut, fit and weld non-OEM parts so you can install them on cars. We all know that these parts are not the same as OE parts but this class can help. Learn new important tricks. Also covered is how to notify CAPA that the parts still do not fit. This class has a long break in the middle while we wait for other parts to arrive to discuss them. The cost of the class includes the long break. Bringing a lunch is suggested. Also covered is a short primer on the concept of denial and futility.

Manufacturer Recommendations: When to Use Them, When Not To
2.2 Points
Class Code: MRWUTWNT

Learn when to follow the auto manufacturers’ recommendations and position statements and when to ignore them. This class will help you distinguish between important procedures and the “just kidding” ones that the auto body industry seems to love. Classes are scheduled but you will have to guess at the time, just like the procedures.

Fundamentals in the Body Business
2 Points
Class Code: FIBB

In this class, you can learn how to build a strong, solid relationship on the foundation of padded and improper billing practices required by industry-wide substandard labor rates. Included in this class are examples of how to explain to the media, the customer and prosecutors why an hour billed in a body shop has no relationship to the 60 minutes on a clock. The class length is four hours and the cost is $20-per-hour or $80 total, but you will need to complete the class in less than two hours or you will fail and no Gold Class points will be offered. This class is a prerequisite to all others. Attendees will receive clocks that spin twice as fast as normal clocks – great to use when calculating labor rates and straightening time. Most technicians already have them. Do not miss this one! (Or is it two?)

How to Keep Your DRPs While Following I-CAR Repair Methods
4 Points
Class Code: LMAO

Learn how to identify those quality repair procedures that I-CAR recommends and those you can ignore. Find out which procedures just cost too much and learn how to avoid them because, after all, maintaining a DRP is more valuable than I-CAR-recommended repair methods.

Calculating the Return-on-Investment in I-CAR Training
Points and Class Code TBA

This class is still under development and should be available in the first quarter of 2046.

Make Your Repairs Look Safe Even When They Are Not
4 Points
Class Code: LCS

Designed for shops trying to compete in a performance-metric environment with lesser-quality shops that already understand this concept. It is not too late to catch up: Learn to straighten when you should replace. Bondo is back in style. Explore the use of “structural Bondo” for kinked frame rails and bumper reinforcements.

Understanding and Calculating Return-On-Investment
½ Point
Class Code: ROI-NOT

New concept to the collision repair industry! This basic business tenet has been around for a long time but not in this industry. Learn the difference between a business and a hobby. Learn the difference between running a profitable business and just earning a paycheck. Learn how to be in denial about your inefficiencies. And learn how to love it even while on your way to bankruptcy court.

Ignoring Damage Even When You See It
10 Points
Class Code: HIDEIT

Ten great excuses that will not work but will allow you to stay in business and remain friends with adjusters, appraiser and claims managers. Learn how to win the low-cost provider war and keep your DRP relationships intact. Class offers tips and ideas such as talking about I-CAR, using I-CAR plaques and marketing materials but never repairing cars using expensive and unnecessary I-CAR concepts.
